It was 2:39 pm as I walked up the stairs after taking the subway to Hollywood. Once up the stairs I was on sunset drive in front of the famous Microsoft Theater (Formally known as the Kodak Theater. This street is famous as it constantly pops up in Hollywood movies. For foreigners, it's an amazing sight to take in. The lights, the various architectures as well as the people dressed up as famous movie characters such as Jack Sparrow and Darth Vader. But for my friend and I, we saw it for what it was, a dirty city, the air was was poor in quality, the smell of smog and urine surrounded us as the homeless and characters fought for the money that flowed out the of the tourists wallets. We quickly stepped off the main road and took a couple smaller streets to get to the venue.
We arrived right as Rise Against was doing their sound check and managed to hear them play Bricks. We walk to the corner of the street towards the entrance to see a very long line. We had arrived three hours early to be first in line, turns out, a lot of people had arrived at 10:00 am. We quickly make our way towards the end of line which was at the other side where we soon started talking to some much older fans (50-60 years old). After three very sweaty hot hours and two bootleg shirt purchases, the doors finally opened.
Let Live: Hands down, the best opening band I've seen. The energy brought onstage by them was amazing. I wish they had played longer.
Killswitch Engage: Meh is all I have to say about them. Fuck their fans is all I have to say about the people who went to see them. They were rude pretentious assholes.
Rise Against: I've seen Rise Against four times, 2007, 2009, 2011 (Bad Religon and The Descendents!) and 2015 (This show). Hands down, this was the best show they ever put on. Youtube videos do no justice to this band. The pit was very violent during Killswitch Engage and I thought once Rise Against came on, it would mellow out. I thought wrong. The pit became a war-zone. While it was fun I spent the next three days incredibly sore and covered in bruises. Tim's urgency carried the show. His soul and passion rang through his voice. His speech before Make It Stop brought so much emotion from the crowd. Zach's jump kicks and overall bouncing around the stage was fun to watch as Joe took on a more chill approach. I really wish Brandon would do a solo or something, he always seems tucked behind everyone else and never calls out attention to himself which is a shame because his drumming is fantastic.
Once the show ended, I was covered in the sweat of at least 40 other fans, covered in spilled beer and hyper alert from the adrenaline coursing through my veins. We went outside to wait for the band to appear for a quick meet and greet only to be told by security that the band had already left so we should leave too. (It was the birthday of Zach's wife so we figured they left to celebrate only to find out security had lied as some fans managed to get and post pictures with Zach and Joe after the show).
Overall, best show they ever put on in my opinion. The R I S E lights were a great addition and my only complaints were that they had stopped playing Tragedy + Time before this show and the next day after this show they began playing The Eco-Terrorist In Me live, my favourite song off The Black Market.
