I was so excited for this concert. It was the first time I’d be seeing my favourite band, Rise Against, and I could not wait. The drive to the venue was about an hour away from where I live and I remember about half way, I started getting really jumpy and excited and my mum started laughing because I’m sure I looked ridiculous.
So we got to the area and anyone who’s been there before probably knows that Margaret Court is almost hidden behind Rod Laver Arena. We were so confused because we had no idea where the venue was. All around us were hundreds of middle aged women wearing fancy clothing, big handbags, buckets full of makeup and painful-looking high heels. It was a little intimidating to be perfectly honest, because many of them were giving glares and whispering about the people around them. We worked out that they were there to see Oprah at the venue next to us.
Well eventually we arrived, and we had some time before the concert started. Mum and I got some food and then went to the merchandise store so that I could buy a concert t-shirt. When we started to hear some music, we headed inside to our seats. Although we were not on the ground or particularly close to the stage, Mum and I were quite lucky because our seats were in the back, front row. Because the arena is pretty small, we were actually able to see quite well.
Before Rise Against played, there were two bands supporting. I was pretty disappointed to find out that Killswitch Engage and Letlive were not performing with RA in Australia, but was pleasantly surprised by Clowns, one of the supporting acts, and Outright, the other. Outright were able to get the crowd excited but Clowns got everyone jumping and super hyped. If I remember correctly, the lead singer actually jumped into the crowd twice and ran into it once.
When Rise Against started, it was just so amazing. They came on with a beautiful backdrop and lights, and started with a kick of energy. You could feel the crowd’s energy and excitement in the air. They played an amazing set, with Tim even performing two acoustic songs; ‘Swing Life Away’ and a cover of Redgum’s ‘I Was Only 19’. I couldn’t tell you exactly what set they played as I was just lost in the excitement and far too happy to try and remember.
One of the funniest parts of the concert was when they stopped and Tim said: “Last time we came here with the Foo Fighters. Today, we are here with Oprah!” and both him and Zach just doubled over laughing. Then he asked Joe and Zach if either of them had gotten a call back from her about singing with them. It was an awesome experience and one of the things I remember from during the concert was when Tim was leaning into the crowd from the edge of the stage and one fan jumped up and hugged him. It was so wonderful to see because he didn’t seem upset at all and the fan just hugged him with what looked like so much determination and adoration.
Hopefully they will come back soon!
